Choosing a table lamp feels simple until you're standing in front of dozens of options. Size, style, light temperature, shade material — every detail affects how a room feels. Here's what we've learned from curating hundreds of designer lamps.
Start with Purpose, Not Style
Before you think about aesthetics, ask yourself: what is this lamp's job? A bedside lamp needs warm, dimmable light that won't keep your partner awake. A desk lamp needs focused, natural-white light for reading. A living room accent lamp needs to set a mood — it's about ambiance, not task lighting. Once you know the job, the style choices narrow themselves.
The Size Rule Most People Forget
The shade diameter should be roughly two-thirds the width of the surface it sits on. A 12-inch shade on a 6-inch nightstand looks top-heavy. A 6-inch shade on a 30-inch console looks lost. For bedside tables, aim for a total lamp height of 24–30 inches — the bottom of the shade should be at your eye level when you're sitting in bed.
Light Temperature Changes Everything
This is the single biggest factor most people overlook. Warm light (2700K–3000K) makes a room feel cozy and intimate — perfect for bedrooms and living rooms. Natural light (4000K) is clean and alert — ideal for offices and reading nooks. Cool white (5000K+) is clinical and energizing — best for task areas. Many of our lamps offer all three modes in one, so you can adapt the same lamp to different moods throughout the day.
Material Tells a Story
Glass diffuses light softly and creates an ambient glow — think of our Bauhaus Amber Glass Lamp. Natural stone like travertine or marble adds weight and gravitas — the light becomes secondary to the sculptural form. Fabric shades give the warmest, most diffused light, casting gentle shadows like our Vintage Scalloped Shade Lamp.
Our Recommendation by Room
Bedroom: Warm light, fabric or glass shade, dimmable. Something you can touch to turn off without fumbling.
Living Room: A sculptural statement piece that looks beautiful even when off.
Home Office: Natural white light, adjustable brightness, clean lines.
Entryway: Go bold — this is where a sculptural piece earns its keep.
